The High Commissioner to attend a World Refugee Day Celebration in Ethiopia
TThe UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Filippo Grandi will be attending this year’s world refugee day celebration on June 20 in Gambella region Ethiopia with South Sudanese refugees.
Since taking office last year, Grandi’s visit will be his second to a refugee camp in Ethiopia. He first came in February 2016 a month after sworn in as the High Commissioner early that year.
The Gambella celebration will be a national one in attendance by donor country representative, members of the diplomatic community, ambassadors and senior officials from various governmental and non-governmental organizations. The ARRA is undertaking preparations to celebrate the day in collaboration with UNHCR.
The United Nations’ (UN) World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year. This event honors the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
The Gambella refugee camps are home to more than 365,000 South Sudanese refugees hosted in seven locations in the region.
