The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on December 17, 2018 handed over two ambulances to the Agency for Refugees and Returnees Affairs. The ambulances worth 87,387.72 USD were purchased with the generous funding of the Embassies of Sweden as part of UNFPA supported emergency response projects focusing on reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS and Gender Based Violence.
The ambulances will be located in Nguenyyiel and Pugnido 2 refugee camps in the Gambella regional with a view to serving both refugees and the communities that host them particularly on empowerment of women and girls, including protection from Gender-Based Violence. The ambulances are expected to strengthen referral linkages in addressing obstetric complications and other critical cases in emergency settings thereby contributing to the reduction of maternal and child morbidity and mortality. The Ambassadors of Denmark and Sweden, senior officials of Ministry of health, Deputy Director of ARRA, Somali regional health bureau, representatives of UNFPA and UNHCR were present at the handover ceremony. The deputy director of ARRA Mr.Eyob Awoke applauds UNFPA’s support to the Ethiopian refugee operation and stated that “the improvement of the health sector has been and will remain as our top priority.”
